ILIGAN CITY, December 19, 2017—The staff and volunteers from the different sectors of Duyog Marawi were given workshop on Protection Mainstreaming in Conflict Emergency Response.

Intended to hone DM volunteers with basic skills that will prepare them as humanitarian responders in emergency situations, the workshop was held on December 19, at the Convention Center of the Mindanao State University.

107 DM staff and volunteers were given training by the National Secretariat for Social Action (NASSA), the social action arm of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP).

“it is really a must for them to really know the basics on humanitarian principles,” said Jennie Curiano, one of the resource persons of the workshop.

Curiano shared about the core humanitarian principles to volunteers of DM following the introduction of Sphere Project, a book designed for use during humanitarian response by another speaker, Ava Guardian, a program coordinator.

Maria Melania Samonte, one of the resource persons also talked “Protection mainstreaming in conflict emergency response.”
A preview of the theatrical play, “Bayanihang Pilipino 2017 Peace Theater” by Duyog Marawi’s MSU sector graced the opening of the workshop

“As a volunteer, I learned something from our visitor like how to be patient, maginghanda (to be prepared)…responsibilidad ko na ibigay ang aking kakayanan para sa mga nangangailangan (it is my responsibility to serve those needy)” said Jawadodin D. Macmod, a survivor volunteer under the peace corridor program of DM.

For her part, Fatima Marohombsar, a community-based peace educator, said that in the workshop she learned about dealing with people and handling oneself as a volunteer

“Aya miyasowa akn sa gya training, Protection Mainstreaming, is paano mag handle sa isang calamity or war. Kung paano mo e-handle magbigay ng mga relief goods sa dami dami ng bibigyan” (what I have learned from this workshop is how to handle things in times of calamity or war. How to manage the distribution of relief goods), Fatima said.

Gifts, hygiene kits, from Joseph Mission Foundation Inc. were also given to the staff and volunteers during the whole day activity. (AM Acmad / Duyog Marawi News)
